Crisis Services
All current MSU students can request an unplanned visit during the Counseling Center’s business hours. Students requesting an unplanned visit must complete a brief self-screener that is reviewed by a Case Manager or designee and used to briefly assess the situation and provide guidance on the appropriate course of action. If the Case Manager or designee determines that the student is experiencing a mental health crisis, a Crisis Appointment will be arranged with a mental health clinician for prompt support, safety assessment, and planning. When the Counseling Center is closed, students may access crisis support by calling our main office number and pressing zero (0) to speak with a crisis counselor by phone.
Who needs a Crisis Appointment?
Counseling Center Crisis Appointments are reserved for students in immediate need
of support.
Situations that may warrant a crisis appointment include:
- A threat to your life
- A threat to another person’s life
- A traumatic event within the past 72 hours, such as:
- Physical or sexual assault
- Being the victim or witness of a crime
- The death of a loved one
What do Crisis Appointments look like?
Counseling Center Crisis Appointments begin with as 20-minute screening focused on assessing safety, providing stabilization, and offering appropriate resources or referrals. Appointments may extend beyond 20 minutes depending on the student's needs.
Clinicians may recommend ongoing counseling. If the student is interested and if appropriate, continued care can be established through the Counseling Center. If not, a referral to external services will be provided.
